Introducing Adopt-a-Family program

Do you want to participate in the program that directly supports a family in the disaster area? You can make food packages and send them to families in the area through Second Harvest Japan (2HJ).

THE NEED

Second Harvest Japan is committed to providing support for those in need of food security.  Immediately after the Great Earthquake and Tsunami hit Tohoku, when hundreds of people took refuge in evacuation centers, the relief effort was focused on providing the most basic of needs so that people could survive one more day at a time. Second Harvest Japan responded to the need by collecting and distributing supplies and food items such as flashlights, batteries, children and adult diapers, feminine sanitary supplies, soap, shampoo, rice, drinks, baby food, cup ramen, instant noodles, snacks, canned goods, and many other goods.

The needs continue to be great, but they have changed over time. Now 7 months later,
many people have moved to temporary housing or have returned to their homes.  Instead of receiving one meal at a time, people are now settling into their own households and preparing their own meals. This requires a different sort of support; instead of food items that are quick and convenient to prepare, people need the basic foodstuffs to plan for daily meals – miso, soy sauce, flour, cooking oil, mayonnaise, sauces, as well as staples such as canned goods and rice

PROJECT PLAN

With these needs in mind, Second Harvest Japan would like to sponsor a new project:

ADOPT A FAMILY

  1. Second Harvest Japan will provide information about families in the disaster area who have registered for food support – name, number of family members, ages of the children.
  2. Second Harvest Japan will provide boxes and a sample menu.
  3. Participants will choose a family and prepare a box of food for that family.
  4. When the box of food is complete, participants will send it to the Second Harvest Japan office in Asakusabashi.
  5. Second Harvest Japan will gather the food boxes and deliver them to the families in the disaster area.
  6. Participants may choose more than one family if they like.
  7. Participants may include in the box cards or messages of encouragement for the family.

INSTRUCTION ON PREPARING A PACKAGE

  • Food packages that are made by the “Adopt a Family” project participants will be collected and held at our office until early December then sent to the homes.  We ask that completed food packages be delivered to our office by DEC 22.

  • If you/your group make 25 or more food packages, Second Harvest Japan will make arrangements to pick them up from your office.

  • If you want to include food items not listed on the Sample List of Food Items, please check with Ruby Sakuma (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) first.  As a rule, any basic Japanese food item is welcome.

  • You are welcome to include Christmas items and messages of encouragement.

  • Perishable items are not allowed.

  • This will be an ongoing project.  You may choose to participate again in the new year for any number of families you wish to support.

2HJ Won PR Award Grand Prix in Social Communication Category!

2HJ Won PR Award Grand Prix 2011 in Social Communication Category! In the world dominated by major PR firms, 2HJ is the first nonprofit organization that won this award! Thank you very much for your nice comments on facebook and twitter and your warm support.

Comments from 2HJ PR Officer Ide:

Thank you all very much for your celebratory messages! One of the judges was explaining the reasons that 2HJ won the award in words like “2HJ is working on the disaster relief paying good attention to the victims’ perspectives” and “2HJ humbly keeps working on their mission instead of touting their achievements.” I was very happy when a judge said s/he was “touched” by the presentation. Judges in charge of other categories also complimented our presentation.

But what made me more happy was that the victim in Ishinomaki I have been keeping in touch with since the disaster sent me a encouraging text in the morning and was so happy to hear the good news! We hope this will be a good impetus to draw more attention to the nonprofits working in the disaster areas and the nonprofits will be more valued like it is in the U.S.

2HJ Speaks at Deutsche Bank on 12/2

Deutsche Bank that sends many volunteers to Second Harvest Japan (2HJ) invited us to a speech occasion at their office. 2HJ’ staff member, Rumi Ide, spoke to Deutsche Bank staff. When Ide mentioned that we needed more volunteer drivers, many attendees asked questions like “Is normal driver’s license okay enough?,” “Can I volunteer even though I don’t speak Japanese?,” or “Where is your office?” We were very thankful for their interests and would like to keep good relationships with them.
