The venue will be at Tokyo Big Sight. 2HJ’s food banking aims to deliver food to the people in need, but at the same time, food banking reduces food waste since food donors donate food to 2HJ instead of letting them go to waste. Food banking is drawing attention more and more in environmental perspective in addition to its function to help the people in need. We are looking forward to seeing you at our booth!

In 2011, we had the tsunami disaster, and Second Harvest Japan sent more than 93 trucks to the disaster-stricken areas. At the symposium, we discussed the disaster relief and food banking. The panel discussion we had during the event. Representatives from the government sector, the corporate sector, and the nonprofit sector talked about their disaster relief experiences. On Oct 16, 2011, we held Food Bank Symposium 2011.

2HJ’s new PR staffer, Rumi Ide, spoke about food company’s experiences in disaster relief as an ex-corporate PR personnel.


Food Bank Symposium 2011 was the fourth food bank symposium since 2008. In 2011, we had the tsunami disaster, and Second Harvest Japan sent more than 93 trucks to the disaster-stricken areas. At the symposium, we discussed the disaster relief and food banking.

Starting from the presentation of a corporation’s contribution to the disaster relief, local nonprofits and food banks from all over Japan presented their efforts in the region, and Mitsubishi Institute reported about the food bank research. There was also a panel discussion by different groups. It was a very productive event.

Some participants said, “Very good symposium,” and “I learned a lot.” This event became a good opportunity for all of us to think about how we can improve our disaster relief.

2HJでは世界食料デー月間の10月中、東日本大震災への支援や、通常の食料支援のため、常温で保存できる食品（同じ製品を最低２００個から）をご提供いただける食品企業を募集しています。

今年の6月から、東北の仮設住宅に住む方々へ食品パッケージを届けているのですが、同じ種類の食品を一定数量必要なため、詰める食品の多くは2HJで購入しています。少しでも長い間、支援を継続できるように、世界食料デーのキャンペーン中に集められた食品でパッケージを作り、被災地に届けますので食品企業のみなさまのご協力お願い致します！

Overview

More than 750,000 people do not have sufficient food every day in Japan. While it’s said that more than one billion people live in hunger all over the world, hunger is not an issue somewhere distant. Food banking, a system to deliver food that would otherwise go to waste to those in need, has been in Japan for 10 years now. The founder of Second Harvest Japan (2HJ), Charles McJilton, and 2HJ COO, Masahiro Otake will discuss food safety-net in Japan and what food banking can do to build it.

Food Issue Seminars marks the World Food Day month, which is October 1, 2010 to Octber 20, 2010. Eight nonprofits will discuss how Japan is related to the hunger issue in the world and try to seek a solution to the hunger issues one billion people in the world are facing. From July through October, different speakers will speak about various issues along with workshops.

About the World Food Day (October 16)
The World Food Day was established by the United Nations as a day to consider world food/hunger issues in the world. 

The World Food Day was established in 1981 based on the decision at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)‘s general meeting. The goal of the World Food Day is to reconsider your current life and improve it so that the world can be more sustainable for all the people. In Japan, initiated by Hunger Free World, many organizations hold various events for several months. Nonprofits dealing with hunger and food issues get together to advertise the campaign to spread the word regarding the issues to as many people as possible.
