Post-event summary

This year’s “No Hunger for the Holidays” charity concert was held on December 15 at St Albans church, and 2HJ extends its gratitude to all who helped make it a great success. Turnout was wonderful; 103 people attended (including pre-reserved tickets, at-the-door purchases, and even several walk-ins from passers-by), giving a “full house.”

The music was equally wonderful, with a variety of traditional holiday songs presented as operatic quartets and arias, performed marvelously by vocalists Kumiko Oguro, Yuko Shinmyo, Yoshiyuki Sakaguchi, and Kou Kanazawa, along with organist Naoko Mizutani providing instrumental accompaniment. The audience also received an extra musical treat, in the form of lovely solo vocals by budding amateur songstress (and daughter of 2HJ founder and proud father, Charles), 13-year-old Mary McJilton.

The evening was rounded off with refreshments, where attendees could mingle while enjoying pastries and coffee, along with a raffle for donated fine wines and other items. A pleasant and successful evening all around, one for which 2HJ owes a great many thanks:

To St Albans Church,
To the performers, and their incredible talent,
To the evening’s donors and benefactors (both food and financial),
To the various volunteers and support staff for their tireless efforts,
And most especially, a heartfelt thanks to the evening’s attendees, whose kindness and support ensured the success of the event, and whose ticket contributions will go a long way towards helping 2HJ in its mission to help feed the hungry and needy in Japan.

As always, on behalf of those we serve, thank you all. Best wishes for the holiday season and New Year, from those of us at Second Harvest Japan.

A big “thank you” to all the 102 people who braved the rain to come to Harvest for Hunger at Fujimamas in Omotesando on October 16. While enjoying delicious and unique food and drinks, attendees learned more about 2HJ’s mission and goals and how they can get involved.

Thanks also to Fujimamas, who kindly hosted the event and, in the last year, provided a total of 1,200 boxed lunches to a women’s shelter 2HJ supports. Also, a very special thanks to Nagano Trading Company for the donation of beer and to Tomei Wines for the donation of wine! Both were happily received.

The presentations at the event focused on 2HJ’s efforts to establish local Second Harvest Pantries nationwide. If you or your organization is able to function as a local pantry, please contact us at pantry@2hj.org/03-3838-3827.

The measure of the greatness of any society is how it deals with those who are least well-off.

Your continued commitment is a reflection of this statement. On behalf of those we serve, Thank you.

October 16 is our annual Harvest for Hunger event to mark World Food Day. This year’s event is by far the most important because we need your help this fall to reach the +650,000 who do not have food security.

Find out how you can help with:
1) Creating a national pantry system to serve low-income households and individuals in need
2) Nation-wide food drive during the month of November
3) Participating in No Hunger for the Holidays (December 15-January 4)

Your presence will make a difference to those who go without each day.

Food Donor Meeting
May 24th 14:00 – 16:00
Location: Kuramaebashi

What are the alternatives to dumping food that is still edible but can no longer be sold in the market? Until recently, the alternatives were rather limited. But more and more companies are learning what food banking can do for their bottom line and more.

Food banking began in the US in the 1960’s to give companies an alternative to dumping product that was still safe for human consumption. Currently, nearly every single food manufacturer, distributor, and importer in the US participates in food banking on some level.

Now entering its sixth year of incorporation, Second Harvest Japan is reaching out to food companies to take the next step in developing food banking in Japan.

The meeting will cover the following points:
1. Benefits to your bottom line
2. Safety and food handling issues
3. Protection of your brand
4. Testimonials from our current donors
